Crime Stoppers Week 2024:
Combating Drug Crime Through Community Action
Crime Stoppers Tasmania is proud to announce the launch of Crime Stoppers Week 2024, focusing on raising awareness about the negative impact of drug crime on the community and encouraging Tasmanians to speak up and report suspicious activities. This year, the campaign is particularly focused on the rising concern of illicit drug use and its broader social, economic, and health-related consequences.
David Daniels OAM, Chair of Crime Stoppers Tasmania, emphasised the critical role that public participation plays in combating drug crime.
“Drug crime affects the entire community. We urge Tasmanians to speak up during Crime Stoppers Week and provide tips anonymously. Your information can significantly impact our fight against illicit drugs and help ensure a safer Tasmania.
“1 in 10 people are victims of drug-related incidents, experiencing verbal abuse, physical abuse or being put in fear.
“In some way, every family in Tasmania has been impacted by drugs; whether it’s directly by losing a loved one to addiction, or indirectly because of the significant health and social costs to the community.”
The Honourable Felix Ellis MP, Minister for Police, Fire and Emergency Management, added his support for the campaign.
“Crime Stoppers Week is an essential initiative that highlights the importance of community involvement in crime prevention. I encourage all Tasmanians to use Crime Stoppers’ anonymous reporting channels to share any information they have about drug-related activities. Together, we can make a significant impact and create a safer community for everyone.”
Commander Doug Oosterloo, Tasmania Police Statewide Services highlighted the collaboration between Tasmania Police and Crime Stoppers.
“Our partnership with Crime Stoppers Tasmania is vital in addressing the growing issue of illicit drug use. The public’s cooperation through anonymous reporting is a powerful tool that aids our investigations and helps us combat drug-related crime more effectively.”
Daniel Hanna, Executive General Manager Federal Group emphasised that safe public spaces are important across the whole state.
“Federal Group is proud to support Crime Stoppers Week and encourages welcoming and safe public spaces for everyone to enjoy. Drug crime and antisocial behaviour has a negative impact on business, employees, visitors and locals.”
If it’s not right, speak up to Crime Stoppers, and stay anonymous if you choose. crimestopperstas.com.au or 1800 333 000
It is important to note that the campaign is not about targeting users of illicit drugs. Crime Stoppers Tasmania asks that the community support those affected by drug use and encourage them to seek the appropriate professional help.
